Pinterest began as a social media tool to share and store pictures.  It was updated two years ago to become more of a search engine. 87% of Pinterest users purchase things they have “pinned” to boards.  Companies can now create DIY platforms that link their company blog to a Pin on Pinterest. Every pin links back to the original source, so Pinterest can be a great source of referral traffic. Pinners can, in turn, click the link and go to the blog to find out how to DIY a project or to purchase something seen.

Making Sense of it all

As a business tool, companies in the creative fields (weddings/events, catering, cake decorating, fashion, blogging, cooking, teachers, etc) can use Pinterest to share inspiration and grow their audiences quickly.  The more a company adds to its boards with a mixture of created content and shared content the higher the engagement will be on Pinterest. If a company has a WordPress website they can install widgets that allow their pictures to be “pinned” to someone’s boards. According to eMarker (2017), only Facebook outranks Pinterest in terms of influencing social media purchases and decisions.

How I transformed my business

So, in real life I’m a Pastry Chef.  I make “Pinterest perfect” cookies, cakes and cupcakes.  It’s my life’s work.  You can see my business blog over on Chef Kimihou. I began posting recipes and how to posts on my blog.  I used that to apply to be a presenter at the local Pinners Conference.  You have to stay focused and push through the noise.  Pinterest moves quickly but you have to be intentional about what you post when you post and what your posts look like.  

Success tips:

  1. Start sharing and organizing content so that Pinners will have a reason to follow either your entire account or one or more of your boards
  2. Enter a descriptive name for your board that’s 20 characters or less.
  3. Return to the boards’ tab and click on the name of your new board, then click the pencil icon to enter more details.
  4. Enter a clear description of what you’ll save to your board, and choose an appropriate category. If you want to start saving Pins to your board but you’re not ready for people to see it yet, you can choose to make the board secret until it’s ready to go.
  5. Actively update your boards and generate new content!
  6. If working with a team, allow access to other team members to keep your boards new and fresh.
  7. Use Pinterest to help start conversations with new and existing clients.

 

This example shows what my boards look like when I first created it and then after I went back to update who my target audience was (with the title), the category (breakfast meals for busy moms) and my description (a little bit of info about me and why this board is necessary).
